Monitoring organization reports that global temperatures on July 21st set a new record

Initial data from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service shows that Sunday, July 21st, was the hottest day on record.

The global average surface temperature on Sunday reached 17.09 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than the previous record of 17.08 degrees Celsius set in July last year, as heat waves simultaneously swept across large areas of the United States, Europe, and Russia.

Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Service, said that as heat waves continue to sweep the globe, it's possible that Sunday's record could be broken again starting this week.

"When these peaks occur, they tend to cluster together," he said.

Last year, from July 3rd to July 6th, the record was broken for four consecutive days, as climate change caused by fossil fuel burning led to extreme high temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere.

Buontempo said that while Sunday's record is only slightly higher than last year's, "it's noteworthy that temperatures over the past 13 months are significantly different compared to previous records."

Compared to the corresponding months in previous years, every month since June 2023 is currently the hottest on record for the Earth.

Some scientists point out that 2024 could surpass 2023 as the hottest year on record, as climate change and the El Niño natural weather phenomenon, which ended in April, have caused temperatures to rise further this year.

Buontempo said, "Due to the continuous increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, we will inevitably see new records broken in the coming months and years."

Scientists and environmentalists have long called on global leaders and wealthy nations to phase out and stop relying on fossil fuels to prevent the catastrophic impacts of climate change, including increased heat waves.
